Una grasa es un lubricante sólido o semi fluido compuesto por un agente espesante y un líquido lubricante. Las grasas se utilizan como un lubricante capaz de mantenerse en su posición. Son utilizadas para la lubricación de una amplia gama de equipos, tales como: rodamientos, juntas, engranajes abiertos y cables.
Clasificación de las grasas
Para que se pueda clasificar como grasa lubricante es necesario que la composición este formada por aceite que puede ser aceite básico mineral, aceite básico sintético o aceite básico vegetal y debe contar con espesante como son los jabones metálicos simples, jabones metálicos complejos o espesantes de base no jabonosa (poliurea, bentona, sílica gel). También dependiendo el uso puede contener un aditivo que mejora las propiedades deseables, suprime propiedades indeseables o agrega nuevas propiedades.
Ventajas de las grasa
- Persistencia: No requiere ser drenada, provee protección inmediata en procesos de parada – arranque.
- Protección: Mejores propiedades de sellado que los aceites, protege contra corrosión y protege contra los procesos de parada de equipo.
- Limpieza: menores pérdidas por salpicadura, puede ser utilizada en producción de alimentos, fármacos, textiles, etc.
- Se adhieren mejor en las superficies formando una película lubricante muy resistente que separa las superficies metálicas y evita el contacto metal-metal.
- Tienen una gran capacidad de sellado y aislamiento del medio.
- Brindan una excelente protección contra el desgaste y la corrosión.
- Las grasas ofrecen una mayor lubricación frente a altas cargas y bajas velocidades.
Desventajas de las grasas:
- Poca capacidad de refrigeración.
- Se requiere manejo adecuado para evitar contaminación durante el almacenaje.
- Las partículas originadas por el desgaste se retienen en la grasa.
- La contaminación puede incrementar el desgaste y/o el deterioro de la grasa.
- No debe ser utilizada en rodamientos de muy alta velocidad.
- Su capacidad de enfriamiento/transferencia de calor es menor.
- Limita la velocidad en los rodamientos.
